Jane Ann (Schieber) Nichols, 80, died peacefully Monday morning, January 15, 2024 at Central Parke Memory Care in Mason, Ohio where she had resided since October.
She was born in Bucyrus on February 9, 1943 to the late Virgil A. and Mary P. (Caldwell) Schieber. Jane grew up on the family farm on Ridgeton Road which is now owned by her nephew Josh Schieber. After graduating from Holmes-Liberty High School, she went to Ohio State to study education and returned to teach Physical Education at Bucyrus City Schools for 35 years. She also coached girls basketball and volleyball. Jane married Terry L. Nichols of Kenton in 1988 and he just preceded her in death on October 13, 2023.
Those who knew Jane best will remember her for her generosity and faithfulness to her family. She also loved sports and had a very competitive nature. She and her family enjoyed their Lake Erie cottage where they could waterski, play volleyball, swim, and boat with her first husband and father of her children, James F. Hart. They also visited state parks and she supported her son Jim’s figure skating career. While living in Bucyrus, she was an active member of Scioto UMC where her family had long-reaching roots and she played the piano at home. After retirement, she and Terry enjoyed wintering in Vero Beach, Florida where Jane could see her granddaughter grow up and do a lot of biking, swimming, and playing Euchre and other card games with friends.
Jane is survived by sons, James Hart (Victor Gaffin) of Cincinnati and Jonathan (Sheila) Hart of Florida; granddaughter, Leah Elliot (Mel Vargas); brothers, David (Shirley) Schieber and Joe (Alice) Schieber; stepdaughter, Brandy Ruttinger and her family; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister, Carol I. Reed.
Services will be held at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus on Friday, January 19. Family will receive friends from 12-12:55 pm and her funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jim Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brokensword Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are encouraged to be given to National Wildlife Federation, Arbor Day Foundation, Humane Society Serving Crawford County or the Alzheimer's Association. They can be given at the funeral home and memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
