James D. Smith

James D. Smith, 72, of Nevada died Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at OhioHealth MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield.

He was born July 22, 1942 in Bucyrus to the late Lawrence and Beulah (Oberlander) Smith. After attending Bucyrus Schools, James joined the US Army and served in Germany. He returned to Bucyrus and worked as a coppersmith for nearly 40 years, both at D. Picking & Co. and a shop out of his home.

James had a passion for bass fishing.  He knew every pond and lake around, what spots to fish and he loved every moment. He even made his own fishing lures during the winter months.  He was a great dad and loved his children dearly.  He was a hard-working man, great provider for his family and will be remembered as a kind man who was willing to do anything to help someone. When he wasn’t fishing, which was seldom, James did enjoy working on his home and watching football on Sunday and the Buckeyes on Saturday every fall.

James is survived by three children, James D. Smith II and fiancée Stacy Elson, Jonathan Smith and fiancée Lindsay Eimer, and Cherie Andrews and husband Treg; six grandchildren, Kortney Smith, Kylie Smith, Meagan Humphries and husband Mike, Hayley Smith, Shelby Andrews and Brendan Andrews; four great grandchildren, Drew, Madison, Colt, and Charlie; and his sister, Joyce Carpenter.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by brother, Larry DeWain Smith and infant sister, Janice Darline Smith.

James did not wish for any public services. He will be buried next to his parents in Oakwood Cemetery.
