Ira J. Zornes, 75, also referred to by friends and family as “Red” or “Jack”, and a resident of Bucyrus, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at his residence.
He was born December 12, 1940 in Tiro to the late Thomas M. and Helen M. (Young) Zornes and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1958. While growing up, Ira was very active in Boy Scouts and appreciative of all he learned through the various levels. Following school, he took a job at the Telegraph Forum where he met a young lady by the name of Regina H. Stockmaster. She was just happy to have found a job but Ira was persistent in forming a long-term relationship and through consistent requests, she realized what a special individual he was. They married on October 5, 1968 and together raised a family and enjoyed many vacations by car all across the United States.
Ira believed in working hard to provide for his family and in addition to his fulltime job at the newspaper where he worked in circulation, as a graphic arts camera man and in the advertising department., he worked several part-time jobs such as Mansfield Ambulance Service, Cussins & Fearn Co., Cardinal Mini-Mart, J.A. Conley Co., Pinkerton Security Co. and Bucyrus Emergency Detachment. He eventually retired from the newspaper just shy of 38 years of service.
Ira was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a former member of the Bucyrus Moose Lodge. He was an avid photographer, known for his freelance work and he loved fishing when the opportunity arose; a favorite spot being Catawba Point on Lake Erie. For Ira, every morning began with reading his daily newspaper and following a long day of work, he often could be found watching an old western movie.
He is survived by Regina, his wife of 47 years; three children whom he considered his greatest accomplishments, Mary (Christian) Smith, Ann Zornes and Eric (Angela) Zornes; all of the Columbus area; three grandchildren, Jennifer Smith, Rebecca Smith and Cynthia Zornes; one sister, Betty L. Butler of Crestline, two sisters-in-law, Emma Zornes of Marion and Catherine Tiell of Tiffin and one brother-in-law, James Stockmaster of Newark, Ohio in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas M. Zornes, Jr. and William A. Zornes; one sister, Joyce E. Morgan and 3 brothers-in-law, Loyd Butler, Robert Tiell and Edward Stockmaster.
His family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 22 at Wise Funeral Service, where a Rosary service will conclude the evening beginning at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. Paul Fahrbach as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Catholic section of Oakwood Cemetery.
