Herman A. Hartmann, 93, formerly of Bucyrus, died Wednesday morning, March 8, 2017 at the Wesminster-Thurber Retirement Community in Columbus.
He was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on March 23, 1923 to the late Herman K. and Jennie G. Fuerstenau Hartmann.
He was a graduate of Huron College, Huron, South Dakota and Western Theological Seminary, Holland Michigan.
Ordination into the Christian Ministry took place in Alpena, South Dakota on May 26, 1946. He was married to Blanche Mae Boschee in Zeeland, North Dakota on May 28, 1946 and she preceded him in death January 5, 2012.
Herman is survived by his son, David and wife, Arlene, nee Missler, of Toledo along with grandchildren, Matthew (Erica) and Christopher and one sister, Elizabeth H. Ferguson of Dallas, Texas. In addition to his parents and wife of 65 years, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark and granddaughter, Katie.
Herman served as pastor of Bethel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Marion, South Dakota, Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Humbird, Wisconsin and Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church, Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The Baltic Charge of the United Church of Christ, Baltic, Ohio and St. John’s United Church of Christ, Bucyrus, Ohio. During this time he also spent a year under the Board for World Ministries as an exchange pastor in Wuppertal, Germany, serving as a pastor in the Evangelical Church of the Union. After his retirement he also served as an interim pastor in Radnor and Waldo, Ohio.
In retirement the Hartmanns lived in Columbus where they worshipped with the North Congregational United Church of Christ and Herman busied himself with translation of the Old and New Testaments from the original languages into “his own English,” occasionally providing portions of his translation to interested friends.

A public memorial service will be held at North Congregational UCC, 2040 Henderson Rd, Columbus at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 25 friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. A service will also be held at St. John’s UCC in Bucyrus at 2:00 pm Sunday, April 30. A private burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Bucyrus.
