Harold Cover

Harold J. Cover, 92, of Bucyrus died peacefully Friday morning, Sept. 26, 2014 at Altercare of Hilliard.

He was born March 24, 1922 at home in Antrim Twp., Wyandot County to the late Ralph O. and Clara E. (Bowlby) Cover. Harold graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1940 and was drafted into the US Army March 25, 1943. He served as a Military Police Escort Guard and ranked as a sharpshooter. He was a member of the 704 Co. that opened the largest US POW Camp in Aliceville, Ala. and was responsible for guarding and transporting both SS and Rommel’s troops from Africa. Harold served in all theaters of WW2 on land and was on Okinawa with the Navy when Japan surrendered. After the war’s conclusion, Harold was honorably discharged on January 28, 1946 when he returned to the family farm. That fall, a young lady named Roma Dobbins caught his attention. A blind date was arranged, two years of courtship began and Harold and Roma were married on October 3, 1948. They built a home where they lived over 50 years on the Crawford-Wyandot County line. Roma preceded him in death Sept. 24, 2011.

Harold was a lifelong farmer and worked as a professional welder in the off season. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, building their house, barn and out buildings on the farm. He loved a good joke and pulled many memorable pranks. He and Roma visited all 50 states and Canada in their motor home and enjoyed military reunions in the US and Europe. In his retirement, Harold returned to woodcrafting, making tables, chairs and cabinets for his family and friends.

Harold is survived by two daughters, Brenda Steigerwalt (friend, Doug Allinger) of Upper Arlington and Treva (Dennis) Wine of Colfax, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lori Goode (Sriram) Krishnan of Falls Church, Va., Troy Wine (Courtney Hill) of Bexley and Scott Wine of Chicago; one great granddaughter, Sathvika Sophie Krishnan; nephews, Steve (Marna) Dobbins, Terry (Sylvia) Crall and Richard (Velma) Rainey; nieces, Joan Dobbins (Roger) Heft, Sharon Crall (James) Buck and Joyce Rainey (Michael) Schifer.

In addition to his parents and wife of 63 years, Harold was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Rainey and Helen Crall.
