Harlan Fenton Roe, 86, of Bucyrus died early Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.
He was born February 3, 1931 in Camp Dix, Kentucky to the late John H. and Julia B. (Gilliam) Roe. After graduating from Laurel High School, Harlan enlisted in the Air Force where he served for 15 years before an honorable medical discharge. While stationed at Loring Air Force Base, Harlan met Mary Quinn at a store she was working at in Caribou, Maine. After a brief courtship, they were married on August 5, 1954. Harlan tried his hand at farming in Kentucky before moving his family to Bucyrus in 1969 to work at Swan Rubber. He eventually made his way to Galion Iron Works from which he retired as a supervisor.
Harlan will be remembered as the classic family man who looked forward to every family gathering, eagerly counting how many guest arrived before calling his brother and sister to share how many showed up. He enjoyed a few trips over the years, but always looked forward to being home where he would feed birds and squirrels and tend to his gardens and yard work. He kept a close eye on politics and always had a joke and story to share. He was a big Cleveland Browns fan and enjoyed watching westerns, listening to bluegrass music, and playing checkers with his grandchildren. A man of faith, Harlan was a member of Lincoln Ave. Church of Christ.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Roe; children, Michael (Katy) Roe, John (Kimberly) Roe, Jo Ann (Ron) Patrick, Curt (Laura) Roe, and Jeff (Tammy) Roe; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with one expected; brother, Emeral Roe; sister, Thelma (Rufus) Haney; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Clifford Roe and sisters, Vingie Logan and Vivian Lewis Hamilton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Wise Funeral Service with Minister Russell Howard officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by the US Air Force and American Legion Honor Guards. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 pm and Saturday from 10-10:50 am.
Photos and memories can be shared on Harlan’s Tribute Wall.
