H. Allen Murphey Ii

H. Allen Murphey II, 68, of Columbus died Monday, September 10, 2018 at James Cancer Hospital following a one-year illness.



Allen was born April 4, 1950 in San Diego, California where his father was stationed in the service and his mother was teaching. He grew up in Oregon, Ohio and graduated from Clay High School in 1968. He continued his education at Bowling Green State University, graduating in 1972. This led Allen to his passions of teaching, writing and mentoring others. He taught 7th grade language arts for many years in Cincinnati in the Northwest School District. While teaching, Allen finished his formal education, receiving his master’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Allen had a love of words and was a published author and poet and an avid reader. He was proud of his involvement in Power of the Pen and his time spent as an adjunct professor of creative writing at Miami University in Hamilton, Ohio.

Allen’s love of books also lead him to working part-time in various book stores. It was while working at the Little Professor Book Store in Cincinnati that he met Susan Seits whom he married in 1999 and she survives. Allen finished his work career at the OSU Wexner Medical Center where he worked for the past three years as a Unit Clerk and a Bed Placement Coordinator.



Raised in the Lutheran church he was lastly a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cincinnati. Outside of reading and writing he loved music and was being taught to knit by his daughter, Paige. Paige was his joy and he was the dad who went to every play, conference, concert, doctor’s appointment and anything else that involved his daughter. He worked hard to provide for his family and always strived to make them happy. Allen was a witty individual with a great sense of humor who will be remembered as “one of the good guys” by all who knew him.



In addition to Susan, his wife of 19 years, Allen is survived by his pride and joy, daughter, A. Paige Murphey; one brother, Robert Murphey; niece, Gannon Murphey; and cousin, Emily Kruse whom he held close to his heart as well as other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry A. Murphey I and Marcella (Hansen) Murphey.



Friends may call from 2-5 pm Sunday, September 16 at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820 where his funeral will be held at 12 Noon Monday with Pastor Larry Donner officiating. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
