Geraldine R. Wells, 89, died peacefully Thursday, April 1, 2021, lovingly surrounded by her children at Westbrook Assisted Living in Upper Sandusky, where she had been receiving care since November of 2020.
Geri was born December 15, 1931 in Bucyrus to the late Daniel and Hilda (Keiner) Jaroe. Her lifelong caring nature was fostered as she grew up caring for her two older brothers, both of whom suffered with Muscular Dystrophy. She graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1950 and that summer married her high school sweetheart, Ronald D. Wells, on August 13. They shared 32 years of marriage prior to his death in 1983.
Nothing was more precious to Geri than her family and she is survived by her children, Dan (Roxanne) Wells, Cindy (Dave) Markley, Linda (Glen) Assenheimer, and Ron Wells; grandchildren, Mick Wells, Michelle (Paul) Garinger, Andrew (Melinda) Markley, Kylie (Bryan) Lohr, Kym Markley, Joel (Laura) Assenheimer, Kyle (Jacqueline) Assenheimer, and Emily (Sean) Zimmer; 13 great grandchildren; her sister, Rosetta Evans of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.
Many will remember Geri as a gifted seamstress who worked from her home. She designed and made her daughter Linda’s wedding dress. The beautiful appliques she hand stitched were later sewn on her granddaughter Emily’s wedding dress just this past year. She also created many other wedding, prom and Bratwurst Festival dresses and countless locals benefited from her mending and altering services. So many of her cherished friendships were formed through that work. Earlier Geri worked as a secretary for her husband at Wells Insurance Agency. She also worked at Ohio Mutual Insurance and St. John’s UCC. Geri had a love for crafts and a passion for gardening and flowers as one could see in her own yard. She had an enormous heart for animals and especially loved her cat. Geri was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus where she served faithfully on several church committees.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brothers, Howard and Edward; a great granddaughter, Vera Assenheimer; May Laipply (sister-in-law) with whom she was especially close; and two dear friends Suzanne Beall and Millie Palenshus.
Services will be held on Tuesday, April 6 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus, Ohio. Family will receive friends from 11 am – 12:45 pm and the funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Mike Greenler officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Those wishing to make memorial donations are encouraged to make gifts payable to the Humane Society Serving Crawford County or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Then may given at the church or through Wise Funeral Service.
Memories and photos can be shared on Geri’s Tribute Wall.
