Geneva Marie Underwood Sidenstricker, 95, of Marion died peacefully Thursday, July 26, 2018 at Westbrook Assisted Living and Memory Care in Upper Sandusky where she received tremendous care along with that of Kindred Hospice.
She was born July 1, 1923 on the family farm in Dallas Twp., Crawford County to the late Lester and Maude (Jury) Underwood, Sr. She graduated from Mt. Zion High School on May 21, 1941 where she was class Vice-President and played in the band. Geneva took clerical training at Bowling Green State University before returning home to work for Erie Railroad in Marion. This was where she met Charles W. Sidenstricker and they were married at Wyandot Methodist Church by Minister Fred Ross on June 6, 1948.
Geneva retired from Erie Lackawanna Railway in the 1970s and after Charlie’s retirement in 1980, the two volunteered for Meals on Wheels for over 20 years, enjoyed hitting the road in various Winnebagos, and meeting up with fellow railroad retirees and the Mid-Ohio Winnebago Camp Club. They wintered in Lake Okeechobee, Florida for over 25 years and enjoyed eating out. She was a member of Crossroads UMC and the former Calvary UMC and liked keeping busy with crafts, collecting pins, and playing the piano. She’ll be remembered for her frugal nature, having a coupon or discount for everything and enjoying a cup of incredibly hot coffee.
Geneva is survived by her sister-in-law, Barb Underwood; two nephews, Milton (Dawn) and Brian Underwood; three nieces, Susan Jarvis, Rosemary Cox, and Nancy Church; three special grandnieces, Grace, Hannah, and Abigail Underwood; and several great nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by Charlie on Dec. 13, 2012 after 64 years of marriage in addition to her parents and brother, Lester Underwood, Jr.
Geneva’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 31 from 5-7 pm at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus where her funeral will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am with Rev. Jennifer Bass officiating. Burial will follow in Grand Prairie Cemetery, Brush Ridge.
Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to Lifecare Alliance (for Marion County Meals on Wheels) or Kindred Hospice and given at the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Geneva’s Tribute Wall.
