Galen Lee Whitmeyer, 84, of Bucyrus, died Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at OSU Wexner Medical Center following a sudden health issue.
He was born June 22, 1934 in Crawford County to the late Arthur W. and Louida U. (Cox) Whitmeyer. Galen was a 1952 graduate of Holmes Liberty High School and soon thereafter, enlisted in the US Navy. He served as a hospital corpsman and was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital. On July 17, 1954, he married Jeanice A. Leuthold and she survives.
Galen worked 39 years at Timken and drove bus part time for Wynford Schools. Galen was a longtime member of Epworth and Bucyrus UMC, where he sang in the choir for 50 plus years and served on various committees.
Galen played adult fastpitch softball player for many years. He coached Little League baseball and softball and was influential in forming girls softball at Wynford.
In addition to Jeanice, his wife of 64 years, Galen is survived by three children, David Whitmeyer, William Whitmeyer, and Linda (Daniel) Schwab; a daughter-in-law, Antoinette Whitmeyer; nine grandchildren, Amy (Jeff) Parsons, Lisa Gable, Brian (Stacie) Whitmeyer, Alec (Austyn) Whitmeyer, Kevin Whitmeyer, Zoey Whitmeyer, Max Whitmeyer, Roxanne Schwab and Michael Schwab; 10 great grandchildren, Ashley, MacKenna, Landon and Alexander Parsons, Zackary, Xander and Aurora Gable, Corbin Winningham and Josslyn and Gavin Whitmeyer; one brother, Robert (Norma) Whitmeyer and a sister-in-law, Carol Whitmeyer. Galen was preceded in death by a son, Larry Whitmeyer and a brother, Lyle Whitmeyer.
A public memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Bucyrus UMC with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Family will gather with friends at a meal following the service. A private burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery where full Military Rites will be provided by both the US Navy and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guard.
His family specifically request that in lieu of flowers, Galen would be honored if any gifts given were made payable to the Bucyrus UMC. These gifts will be applied towards the building fund and will be accepted through Wise Funeral Service or at the church on the morning of his service.
