Evelyn L. Pollock, 94, of Bucyrus passed away peacefully Thursday morning, April 17, 2014 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
She was born in Bucyrus March 4, 1920 to the late Milo and Nellie (Dobbins) Lust. She grew up on the family farm in Holmes Twp., graduated from Holmes-Liberty and earned her degree in Home Economics from Bowling Green State University and returned to Crawford County to teach Home Ec. Evelyn married Preston M. Pollock on December 28, 1947. Preston had worked for her father on the farm before embarking on his Navy career. They lived in Washington State and California for a time, but Evelyn taught school and raised their family in Bucyrus during most of his time in the Navy. Preston preceded her in death April 10, 2004.
“Mrs. Pollock” taught in Sycamore, Holmes-Liberty, Sulphur Springs and spent the majority of her career in Bucyrus City Schools, retiring after 32 years. She loved students and continued judging food and sewing projects for the fair and other contests. Sewing, crocheting and cooking were also hobbies she loved at home along with maintaining a beautiful yard, plants and flowers. She enjoyed collecting Hummel figurines and dolls, spending time with fellow enthusiasts in local doll clubs, and she and Preston also loved to travel. Evelyn visited Preston at various posts throughout his career and they continued to travel to Hawaii, South America, Europe, and all over the U.S. well into their golden years.
Evelyn will be remembered as a kind-hearted, easygoing and humble lady who loved her friends and especially her family. Always the hostess, she insisted on having holiday gatherings at her home even as the family grew bigger. She was blessed with a level head, sharp mind and common sense, never giving bad advice.
She is survived by two sons, Ed (Monica) Pollock and Glenn (Judy) Pollock, both of Bucyrus; six grandchildren, Tonya (Bob) Geiger, Renee (Dave) Dodge, Amy (Jim) Veil, Justin (Jen) Shupp, Coden Pollock and Titus (Andrea) Pollock; and eight great grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Andrew, Tanner, Alexa, Logan, Morgan and Corbyn.
In addition to her parents and husband of 56 years, Evelyn was also preceded in death by her son, Ted.
The Pollock family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 22 from 4-6 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where her funeral will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Jividen officiating. The procession will pass locations special to Evelyn throughout her life on its way to Brokensword Cemetery where she will be laid to rest.
