Eugene W. Gebhardt

Eugene W. Gebhardt, 80, of Bucyrus, died Thursday, November 27, 2014 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born June 9, 1934 in Lykens Twp. to the late Walter K. and Evelyn M. (Bower) Gebhardt and was a 1953 graduate of Lykens High School.  Downtown Bucyrus is where Gene met Marilyn Schifer while lapping one weekend. They hit it off and were married in 1955. Through the years, they have enjoyed many family vacations and RV trips across the continental United States and shared many other great times together.

Gene grew up on the family farm where he learned to drive trucks and tractors. He worked at the State Hwy Dept. for a short time before hiring into Timken where he drove truck and did maintenance for 36 years before retirement.

Gene was a longtime member of Nazareth Lutheran Church until moving to town in 2006 where he and Marilyn joined Good Hope Lutheran Church. They formed many long distance friendships from their years of traveling in the RV and also belonged to an RV Club. He was a family man and rarely seen without Marilyn. Gene had great memories from time spent with his children at Lake Erie, Spain and Myrtle Beach. There were many games of Euchre played with his entire family and Gene somehow always pulled off the jack-nine loaner, which puzzled many. He loved spending time in his vegetable garden and more recently Gene was glad to be able to pick up his great grandson Mason at school and hang out with him playing games.

Gene is survived by Marilyn, his wife of nearly 60 years; three children, Stanley Gebhardt of Port Clinton, Daniel (Ray Usiak) Gebhardt of Hinckley, Ohio and Sandy (David) Adams of Myrtle Beach, SC; two grandchildren, Laura Gebhardt and her son Mason and Josh (Jessica) Gebhardt; one step granddaughter, Kara (Bill) Snyder and their daughter Lauren; two brothers, Robert (Norma) Gebhardt of Lykens Twp. and Elwood (Sarah) Gebhardt of Bucyrus; one sister, Gloria (Marvin) Nelson of Lykens Twp., two sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Ron) Sand and Karen (Schifer) Leuthold and one brother-in-law, Bill Cheek.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his son, Dale Allen Gebhardt, sister-in-law, Rose Cheek and brother-in-law, Robert Schifer.

His family will receive friends for a memorial gathering from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, December 2 at Good Hope Lutheran Church, where his memorial service will be held that day beginning at 4:00 p.m. A private burial will take place at a later date in Brokensword Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Good Hope Samaritan Fund or the Parkinson’s Foundation through the funeral home or at the church during services.
