Esther L. Witter

Esther L. Witter, 88, formerly of Bucyrus and most recently of Mansfield, died Thursday, June 14, 2012 at MedCentral Health System of Mansfield.

She was born December 1, 1923 in Bucyrus to the late Florenz E. and Selma A. (Yaussy) Hildebrand. Esther was a 1941 graduate of Leesville High School and on April 10, 1947 married Robert E. Witter who preceded her in death on February 4, 1994.

Esther was raised to be honest and hardworking. She and Robert owned and operated the Sunoco gas station Bucyrus until purchasing a farm in Mt. Gilead. Together they raised Holstein dairy cattle and worked the grain fields until retiring and moving back to Bucyrus in 1979.

Esther enjoyed spending time with her family and she enjoyed being a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She kept her mind young by working crossword puzzles and most recently enjoyed playing bingo with her friends in Mansfield. Her two true loves were painting and wood carving. She painted things of interest to her and she loved joining fellow members of the Johnny Appleseed Wood Carvers, where she learned carving techniques and got to create unique creations.

Esther is survived by a sister, Martha Bauer of Mt. Gilead; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Hildebrand of Mansfield and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by her brother, John Hildebrand; two sisters, Sarah Hildebrand and Ruth Witter and a niece, Mary Witter Bloomfield.

Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. Monday, June 18 at Wise Funeral Service, where funeral services will be held that day beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Kraps officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Bucyrus UMC or to Johnny Appleseed Wood Carvers through the funeral home.
