Eloise J. Barrows, 74, of Bucyrus died Tuesday evening, May 30, 2017 at Riverside Methodist Hospital after suffering an aneurysm one month ago.
She was born in Bucyrus on July 11, 1942 to the late Earl and Violet (Naufzinger) Shutt. Eloise was an ornery youngster who enjoyed pestering her older sister, Girl Scouts, and accompanying her dad on fishing excursions to Lake Erie, Minnesota, and Canada. She played clarinet in the Bucyrus High School band and after graduating in 1960, Eloise attended Bowling Green where she studied elementary education before returning home to work for CPA George Boyd. She met Lee Barrows with mutual friends on a trip to Lake Erie. He bought her dinner on the way home and were together ever since. They were married December 10, 1966 and he survives.
Never one to let the grass grow under her feet, Eloise volunteered for area organizations including the Hospital Auxiliary which she served as president, Girl Scout leader, and Sunday School teacher, superintendent, and deacon at St. John’s United Church of Christ. She was an accomplished golfer, winning tournaments at area courses and serving as president of Bucyrus Country Club where she was club champ several times. Eloise loved staying active and enjoyed skiing, especially out west, and fishing. Later in life, she gave up her clubs and skis for art. She painted countless scenes and has her work in homes all over the world. She and Lee winter on Chokoloskee Island, Florida with her sister and brother-in-law where she enjoyed her “Florida Family” and painting. Eloise also loved her dogs, especially her current toy poodle, Boomer. She’ll be remembered for her vibrant personality, organizing family events, remembering important dates, and her ability to connect with children.
Eloise is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lee Barrows; sister, Patricia (Robert) Swisher of Caledonia; and her loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert E. Shutt.
Family will receive friends on Monday, June 5 from 5-8 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 am with Pastor Joe Platt officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Those wishing to make donations are encouraged to give to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Humane Society Serving Crawford County. Those gifts will be received at the funeral home and photos and memories can be shared on her Tribute Wall.
