Ellis M. “Obie” Oberlander, 87, of Bucyrus quietly died early Saturday morning, September 27, 2014 at Heartland of Bucyrus.
He was born October 13, 1926 in Bucyrus to the late John A. and Myrtle (Murphy) Oberlander. He married the former Ireta M. Gerhart on December 9, 1947. They met while socializing after work at the Northern Restaurant and have enjoyed over 66 years of marriage.
Obie was a tireless hard worker and provider. In addition to retiring from The Timken Co. after 30 years, he started or worked for a number of businesses including Oberlander’s Cider Mill and John Deere small engine sales and service.
Away from work, Obie was an avid outdoorsman and family man. He loved to fish and enjoyed his place on Lake Erie. Family get-togethers and interaction were his favorite pastimes, sharing wit and wisdom with friends and grandchildren over a game of cards, wetting a line, keeping his pets company, watching westerns or fixing something that was broken. He and Ireta also took a number of bus trips and visited several casinos over the years. He will be remembered for his orneriness, quick wit and having a trusty pocket knife close at hand. Obie was an easygoing man who would do anything for his wife and family.
Obie is survived by his bride, Ireta Oberlander; children, Roger (Vicki) Oberlander of Bucyrus, Carol (Jim) Clady of New Washington, Robert (Shelly) Oberlander of Columbus, Gary (Melissa) Oberlander of Bucyrus and daughter-in-law, Sue Oberlander of Bucyrus; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Obie was preceded in death by his son, John D. Oberlander and three brothers, John G., Louis and Francis “Bounce” Oberlander.
The Oberlander family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Wise Funeral Service where the funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Matt Wilson of Mt. Zion UMC officiating. Burial will follow in Brokensword Cemetery.
