Edward “Pete” Baldy, Sr., 100, of Bucyrus, died Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Inn at Orchard Park.
He was born January 18, 1914 in Rendville, Ohio to the late August and Mary (Thomas) Baldy and was a 1932 graduate of St. Bernard Catholic School. Pete’s strong work ethic lead him to enlist with the Civilian Conservation Corps where he was part of a workforce that constructed stone shelter houses at John Bryan State Park. He worked as a Postmaster in Perry County for 10 years before pursuing his dream of working for the Railroad which began in the late 1930’s. He transferred to Bucyrus in 1950 and continued as an engineer until retiring in the late 1970’s only to then start working for a railroad expediting company.
Pete married Martha L. Siemer, from nearby Corning, Ohio, whom he had known for years through school and church. They recently celebrated 68 years of marriage and have raised their 12 children. Pete shared his faith and work ethic through this own example of hard work and family values. They operated the concession stand at Aumiller Park for many years, where he became known as the “popcorn man.” This carried over to Holy Trinity BINGO night where all proceeds went to the school. People would remember Pete for riding his bicycle around town, often with his wife Martha. Pete had a knack for selling anything. He loved gathering apples, having them ground into cider and then he would ride his bike selling cider to friends and neighbors. He was also an early pioneer of the Holy Trinity paper drive for many years.
In addition to his wife, Martha; Pete is survived by their 12 children, Mary Agnes (Roger) Klotz of Dallas, Texas, Ed (Rita) Baldy, Jr., Jim (Barb) Baldy, both of Bucyrus, Kathy (Tommy) Gwinn of Granbury, Texas, Dr. Greg (Barb) Baldy of Raleigh, NC, Marian (Gene) Sheibley of Bucyrus, Albert (Carol) Baldy of Raleigh, Patti (Jack) Jorgenson of Tyler, Texas, Marty (Jim) Davis of Whitehouse, Texas, Matt (Linda) Baldy of Coto de Caza , Calif., Chris (Heidi) Baldy of Murrysville, Pa. and Beth (Brian) Noack of Litchfield Park, Ariz. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren, many whom have experienced a ride with grandpa in the basket of his bicycle; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Christine Baldy of Columbus and Peg Baldy of Pensacola, Fla. as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
His family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 8 at Wise Funeral Service. The Knights of Columbus, of which Pete was a member, will lead the Rosary that evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. John Miller and Fr. Frederick Schill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to MS Society, The National Autism Association or Holy Trinity Catholic Church through the funeral home. To carry on Pete’s passion for the paper drive, friends are also invited to bring a bundle of newspapers to the funeral home to be added to the next collection.
