Edward L. Reiter

Edward L. Reiter, 80, of Bucyrus died Saturday afternoon, April 16, 2016 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was born April 23, 1935 in Holmes Twp. to the late David and Elnora (Yeiter) Reiter and graduated from Holmes Liberty High School in 1953. He worked as a salesman while serving in the National Guard before being called to serve in the Army from 1955-1957. After his honorable discharge, he returned to sales before studying accounting at Marion Business College. He worked as a deputy auditor in Bucyrus for eight years before going to the Ohio Tax Commission as an agent and retiring after 33 years. Ed married Frances M. Spiegel on February 14, 1961.

Ed will be remembered for always being on the go and for his eccentric personality and big Stetson hat. He enjoyed morning coffee with a variety of friends over the years in service stations, barber shops and restaurants and was an avid traveler and outdoorsman. He visited Asia while on leave during the service and he and Frances have enjoyed camping in both tents and motor homes throughout the US, especially Glacier National Park. Ed drove by himself to Alaska for one memorable trip and loved Canadian fishing trips. At home, he was often tinkering in his woodshop or doing countless home improvement projects for himself and others before relaxing by watching a western movie. He worshipped at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where he served on council and as treasurer. He also sang in the church choir and with the Country Gentlemen. Ed was a member of Harmony Lodge #8 F&AM in Urbana, past member of Toastmasters, past officer in AFSCME, taught “55 Alive” Adult Driver Safety Courses, and was active in his diabetes support group.

Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years; daughter, Jill Grove of Ocala, Florida; twin grandsons, Dr. Schuyler (Lauren) Grove of Ocala and Stacey (Melissa) Grove of Carmel, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Ezra, Aria, Scarlett, and one soon-coming; sisters, Jean Moore of Bucyrus, Joan Allen of Pensacola, Florida, Judy Miller of Marion, and Suzanne (David) Johnson of Indianapolis; brothers-in-law, John (Norma) Spiegel of Bucyrus and Wayne (Linda) Spiegel of Ostrander; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by daughter, Beth Reiter and brothers-in-law, Jim Spiegel, Thomas Moore, Theodore Allen, and Jim Frankenfield.
