Edward G. Berry, 87, died Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Primrose of Marion.
He was born March 29, 1929 in Bucyrus to the late Horace and Mabel (Schell) Berry and was a 1947 graduate of Bucyrus High School. After graduation, Ed attended Ohio State University where he majored in Accounting. On March 18, 1951, he married June A. Kurtz. He was drafted to serve in the US Army and was stationed in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1953.
Ed‘s life was described by many characteristics and hard work was at the top. He began working at Kobey for a time before being hired into Timken as a janitor. Because of his strong work ethic, he advanced his career retiring as a Chief Manufacturing Engineer at the age of 62. Strong faith was another quality of Ed. Many days, on his way to work, he’d stop at Good Hope Lutheran Church where he and June were members so he could pray. He was also very active as a church council member, past president of council and was a money counter for many years. Ed was a difference maker. He believed in putting the needs of others ahead of his own and he did this through serving on the Salvation Army Board, Bucyrus City Council, two years as Bucyrus Council President and most importantly in his family. He was there when they needed anything and he was quick to let them know his love of them.
Ed lived to golf and was a master of the game. He played in various leagues, enjoyed going on golf trips and was most proud of his hole in one on No. 18 at Bucyrus. Ed will be remembered as a prankster and you will need to visit with one of his family members for a story or two. He and June enjoyed playing Joker and cards with friends, dining out and they loved to relax by sitting on their lawn chairs in the garage watching people.
In addition to June, his wife of 65 years, Ed is survived by his treasures. They include three children, Denise (Kris) TenEyck, Renee (Doug) Leuthold, and Jim (Darla) Berry; four grandchildren, Jeff (Nana) Fishpaw, Mark (Heather) Fishpaw, Taylor Berry, and Jenna Berry; and six great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 21 at Wise Funeral Service. His funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Good Hope Lutheran Church with Pastor Renee Ahern officiating and burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery where full military rites will be provided by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
Memorial contributions may be given to Bucyrus Salvation Army or Heartland Hospice through the funeral home.
