Edward Bartley, 74, of Bucyrus died Friday afternoon, July 27, 2012 at his home after a brief battle with cancer.
Ed was born July 7, 1938 in Ash Camp, Ky. to the late Webster and Lola (Ratliff) Bartley. He graduated from Edison (Ohio) High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1962 in Panama, Cuba, the Mediterranean and aboard the U.S.S. Eaton.
"Golf." Those who knew Ed knew he was passionate for the game and the stretches of land on which it is played. He worked as a greens keeper for a number of courses over his lifetime, namely Pine Lakes, New Winchester and, most recently, Bucyrus. He was a longtime member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and assisted course owners and attendants everywhere he lived when needed. Ed met Pat Panas when she asked him for help with her golf game and, soon, her game improved along with their relationship. They were married June 4, 2005 and enjoyed their seven years together golfing, traveling and at their winter home in Lehigh Acres, Fla.
Prior to working in golf full time, Ed operated Bartley's Marathon in Mt. Gilead. He was a member of Mt. Gilead AmVets Post 87, Bucyrus Elks Lodge 156 and Moose Lodge 669, Good Hope Lutheran Church, The Golf Club of Bucyrus and Majestic Golf Club in Lehigh Acres. He was seldom found away from the game he loved, but also enjoyed fishing, trying his luck at casinos and watching sports, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ed will be remembered as a gentle, easygoing person who was always willing to lend a hand.
Ed is survived by his bride, Pat Panas-Bartley; son, Joseph (Diane) Bartley of Winter Springs, Fla.; grandchildren, Michael (Mandy) Robinson, Torri (Todd) Corwin, Nicholas Bartley and Tyrus Bartley; three great grandchildren; stepchildren, Gus Panas and Christina Panas-Krueger and her children, Stephanie and Christopher; and two sisters, Don Retia (Gerry) Madeker and Shelby Jean (Gilbert) Stotts, both of Mount Gilead.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his son, Mark; daughter, Melissa Robinson and infant twins, Michael and Mia.
The Bartley family will receive friends Wednesday, August 1 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. His funeral will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the putting green of The Golf Club of Bucyrus, 1330 E. Mansfield St., with Pastor David Bliss officiating. Comfortable golf attire is encouraged at the funeral where honor guards from the U.S. Navy and American Legion Post 181 will conclude the service with full military rites.
