Earnest M. “Bud” Snavely, 87, of Bucyrus died late Wednesday night, December 11, 2013 at MedCental Health System in Mansfield.
Earnest was born March 3, 1926 in Bucyrus to the late Dale M. and Clara (Baxter) Snavely. He was a 1944 graduate of Bucyrus High School and that same year proudly enlisted in the US Army. During his service, Bud fought in the Battle of Okinawa in the Pacific Theater during WWII.
Following his time in the Army, Bud returned to Bucyrus and on February 23, 1951 married Betty M. Denton who survives. Bud was quick witted and a hard worker. Not so much by title, but by his actions and lessons which he taught his family and those he surrounded himself with to live by. He spent 23 years at Marion Power Shovel, retiring in 1986. Bud also had the gift of being able to fix anything although plumbing repair projects weren’t his favorite.
Bud’s character was second to none. He preferred doing business with a handshake and you could always count on his word. He was a member of Moose Lodge 669, VFW Post 8999 and American Legion, Post 181 where he enjoyed playing cards and socializing with friends. Bud liked to hunt, fish and he and Betty spent many weekends camping at various places. They traveled extensively around the country and always found their way to Las Vegas which was their favorite place to visit. He enjoyed his Browns and Indians but Bud and Betty especially loved watching their grandchildren play for the Bucyrus Redmen over several decades and always arrived early enough to beat the team busses to the events.
In addition to his wife Betty, Bud is survived by three daughters, Sharon (Bob) Hamm of Dover, Theresa (Doug) Yaussy and Lora (Mike) Cox, both of Bucyrus; six grandchildren, Matthew (Heather) Hamm, Michael (Kendra) Hamm, Robbie (Lindsey) Hamm, Mitch Cox, Kyle Cox and Britt Cox; five great grandchildren, Charlie, Emma, Ben, Jack and Max Hamm and four siblings, Bob (Jackie) Snavely of Columbus, Adrin (Cathy) Snavely, Vonetta (Don) Schnarrenberger and Dian Love all of Bucyrus. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Delloris Kelley, Delta Mae Gallant and DeEsta Williams.
His family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Monday, December 16 at Wise Funeral Service where funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Michael Wiechers officiating. Friends are also welcome to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oceola Cemetery where full military rites will be provided by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Bucyrus Athletic Dept. through the funeral home. Online expressions of sympathy may be left at www.wisefuneral.com.
