Duane C. “Bruno” Wanamaker, 82, of Bucyrus died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at his residence.
He was born March 9, 1931 in Toledo to the late John C. and Grace M. (Walters) Wanamaker. In 1949, Duane graduated from Toledo Waite H.S. and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, First Division and was stationed in Korea for 24 months of his service. After his Honorable Discharge, Duane returned to Toledo, attended college at BGSU, and then worked a number of jobs before settling into the grocery business. He worked for the Kroger Co. for five years before moving to Florida to manage a Winn-Dixie store. He then worked in construction and later moved to Indiana where he sold RV’s before moving to Bucyrus to care for his mother.
Duane will be remembered for his strong patriotism and pride in having served his country. One could not pass his residence on South Walnut Street without seeing the reverence he displayed by flying flags and creating a memorial to those who gave their lives in service. He held memberships in VFW Post 1078, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 100, American Legion Post 181 and AmVets Post 27.
Duane is survived by his sister, Shirley Schwemley; good friend and buddy, Richard Baird; and nieces and nephews.
Friends may pay respects Monday, November 25 from 4-7 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Graveside military honors will be rendered by the US Marine Corps Honor Guard when Duane is laid to rest Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Willow Cemetery in Oregon, Ohio.
