Dr. James E. Huggins Jr.

March 20, 1928 — September 25, 2015

Dr. James E. Huggins Jr.

Dr. James E. Huggins, Jr., 87, a dentist, pilot, world traveler and lover of life, left his earthly body early on Friday morning, September 25, 2015 with his wife by his side.

He was born March 20, 1928 in Bucyrus to the late James E. and Grace (Kauffman) Huggins, Sr. and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1946 as class valedictorian. Jim graduated from The Ohio State University with his degree in mechanical engineering and shortly thereafter was drafted into the US Army. Always trying to improve things, Jim patented an electronic switchboard while serving in the army which was a great accomplishment for himself and his country. Following his service, Jim worked at General Electric but felt unchallenged and desired to be his own boss. He went back to Ohio State where he completed his DDS degree from the College of Dentistry in 1960. He returned to Bucyrus and operated a dental practice for 25 years before selling his practice to Dr. Henize due to declining health.

Jim spent many years flying planes and it wasn’t uncommon for him to take a flight to Lake Erie for a fish sandwich and then fly home. He and Sheila, whom he married in 1983, had the privilege of traveling the world and live life to the fullest. Jim was a happy and easy going guy who enjoyed just being around people. He socialized with The Rusty Zippers, shared many fun times with Sheila and also enjoyed golfing and going to Ohio State football games with his longtime friend Dr. Jack Meier. He kept his heart strong with regular exercise and his mind sharp by reading.

Jim is survived by his wife Sheila Crisp Huggins; two stepchildren, Michelle (Doug) Clifton and Matt (Amanda) Smith; one step-grandson, William Mitchell; two siblings, Charles Huggins and Mary Ann (John) Boorn. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and Tom Huggins.

A memorial service will be held NEXT WEEKEND at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 11 at Wise Funeral Service with Mark Dettmer, Certified Celebrant officiating. The US Army Honor Guard will provide military rites to conclude the service.
