Douglas G. Schnabel, 73, died Monday, November 18, 2024 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus from the onset of a recent illness.
He was born August 24, 1951 in Bucyrus to the late Donald G. and Patricia R. (Shaw) Schnabel. While a few of his teachers would have considered him a hellion, Doug did have a great circle of friends in his teen years and played bass on the local garage band, “Israeli Gears.” After graduating from Bucyrus High School in 1970, Doug joined the US Army and served with the 11th Engineer’s Battalion in Germany until his honorable discharge in July of 1972. He returned to work briefly for Swan Rubber before hiring in at The Timken Co. where he was known as “Schnaz” and employed for 37 years. Doug married the former Dawn Schell in 1982.
Doug will be remembered as the ornery jokester people love to be around. You knew he liked you if he was tormenting you and he took the most joy in tormenting his children, which his grandchildren thought was hilarious. He rooted for Ohio State and Cleveland teams and was most often seen wearing a ball cap from his huge collection. He delivered Meals on Wheels for the Council on Aging and he also loved playing golf and participated in the Moose Golf League. Doug was a member of VFW Post 1078, American Legion Post 181, Moose Lodge #669, and served on the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail. Quietly generous, he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need but wanted no recognition.
Doug is survived by his wife of 42 years, Dawn Schnabel; children, Jade Schnabel, Chelsea (Brandon) Green, and Cody Douglas (Sheena) Schnabel; grandchildren, Jacob Green, Ella Green, Richard Alward, Makaila Schnabel, and Caleb Schnabel; and his sister, Christine Schnabel. In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Schabel.
The Schnabel family is honoring Doug’s expressed desire not to hold any public services. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory are encouraged to make it payable to: VFW 1078 Remembering Our Heroes. Gifts can be given through Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus.
Memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
