Dorothy Winola Smith

Dorothy W. (McAdams) Smith, 97, a former resident of both Bucyrus and Lake Odessa, Mich., died Monday, September 2, 2013 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital with her daughter at her bedside. She resided in the Columbus area for the past three years.

Dorothy was born February 22, 1916 in Wapakoneta, Ohio to the late Elmer and Ethel Alice (Horn) McAdams and early in life, her family moved to Bucyrus where she graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1932. Dorothy went on to become an RN, completing her schooling at Henry Ford Hospital in 1940, and continued working there as a surgical nurse until she enlisted in the US Army in 1944. Known to her friends as "Mac", she served as a head surgical nurse in Tinian and Japan. In early 1946 she was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant and returned home to Bucyrus. Shortly thereafter, she caught the eye of a young man named Lorn L. Smith and the two were married July 24 of that year.

Dorothy took a break from nursing to raise her family. They lived primarily in Bucyrus before settling in Lake Odessa where they enjoyed nature and family time. Lorn preceded her in death in 1999 following 52 years of marriage.

Throughout the years, Dorothy maintained her sharp memory and was always interested in knowing how others were doing. She spent many afternoons watching her soaps and countless hours crocheting afghans, Christmas stockings and in the homes of each of her family members was a handmade felt Christmas tree skirt and stockings. As much as she loved doing these things, everything was put on hold when it became time for her weekly trip to the hair salon.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Lorn L. Smith, Jr. and wife Pamela of Loveland, Ohio and Kathleen A. Smith and husband Douglas Keadey of Pickerington and six grandchildren, Matthew Smith, Alyssa (Nathan) Clark, Meredith (Ryan) Park, Andrew (Amy) Keadey, Trevor Smith and Christopher Smith. Also, surviving are seven great grandchildren, Tyler and Quentin Smith, Michael and Alex Park, Elaina, Jaxen and Aubrey Keadey along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy is preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Smith; three brothers, Marcellus, Arden and Harold McAdams and two sisters, Crystal Wiles and Cleona May Stormer.

Her family will receive friends from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Friday, September 6 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where her funeral will be held that day beginning at 1:00 p.m. with Mark Dettmer, Certified Celebrant officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites being provided by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
