Dorothy Rowles, 98, of Bucyrus died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Altercare of Bucyrus where she had been a resident living with dementia for over two years.
She was born March 8, 1919 in Bucyrus to the late Fred C. Beehner and Desta A. (Hancock) Beehner Smith. She graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1937 and worked at Heckert’s Grocery. She married Charles A. Rowles in 1943 and he preceded her in death in 1995.
Dorothy was remembered in her school days for her willingness to help others which she carried on in her work at the store, as a homemaker, and childcare provider for her grandchildren. She was blessed with good health for most of her life, driving until the age of 96 and seeing that her granddaughters had a healthy breakfast of eggs and Ovaltine. She enjoyed baking sweets and had a soft spot for fast food, especially Clancy’s Hamburgers. Dorothy and Charles enjoyed camping and motorcycle rides and volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels for several years. She was a lifelong member of the Bucyrus Seventh-Day Adventist Church and, at home, she enjoyed the company of her cats and keeping up with the neighbors.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, David (Su) Rowles and Daniel Rowles; four grandchildren, Jon Rowles, Erin (Jeff) Chandler, Renee Rowles, and Krista Baker; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband of 52 years, she was preceded in death by siblings, Clarence Beehner, Bessie Sauselen, Robert Beehner, and Jean Miller; stepbrothers, Hugh and Willard Smith; and stepfather, William H. Smith.
Dorothy will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery. No services will be held. Friends are asked to consider a donation in her memory made payable to the Humane Society Serving Crawford County and given through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820.
Photos and memories can be shared on Dorothy’s Tribute Wall.
