Dorothy I. Phillips, 79, of Moody, Alabama and formerly a resident of both Bucyrus and Galion, died Monday, February 17, 2014 in Alabama.
She was born March 23, 1934 in Bucyrus to the late Fred & Mercy (Turner) Mitchelson and was a graduate of Bucyrus High School.
Dorothy found great joy in raising her children and loved spending time with family. On June 5, 1971 she married Carl Phillips and in 1974 they moved to Galion where they enjoyed working in their vegetable garden, planting flowers around the home and hosted many summer cookouts, which were family favorites. Dorothy also worked for a number of years at Eastside Carryout in Galion. Following Carl’s death in 2001, Dorothy moved to Moody in 2004 to be closer to family.
She was always a happy person who brought a smile to anyone she came in contact with. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed into St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus. She was a longtime member of the ladies auxiliary for the VFW Post 4329, American Legion Post 243 and AMVETS Post 1979 and was a founding member of the Butches and Bangs Mothers Club in Bucyrus.
She is survived by three children, Steven (Linda) Reed of Delaware, Ohio, Christine Reed and partner, Jackie Hadley of Moody and Susan (Rick) Rigsby of Seymour, Ind.; two step-children, Jim (Alita) Phillips of Bucyrus and Loraine Phillips of Westerville, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Irene Phillips of Crestline; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mitchelson and a sister, Arlene Hogan.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Monday, February 24 at Wise Funeral Service where her funeral will be held that day beginning at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Don Neumann officiating. A private burial will be held in Old Mission Cemetery in Upper Sandusky.
Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy may be left in the Memorial Guestbook below.
