Dorothy I. Hamlin, 86, of Bucyrus died early Sunday morning, March 3, 2013 at Altercare of Bucyrus after battling Alzheimer's disease for the past few years.
She was born near Tiro on October 12, 1926 to the late Joseph and Inez (Gerstenslager) Kalb. Dorothy graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1945. A couple years later, she met a young man named Guy R. Hamlin while lapping in downtown Bucyrus. She invited him to church, they began dating and they married April 10, 1948.
In addition to her husband of nearly 65 years, she is survived by daughter, Karen (Tom) Kinn; son, David (Glenda) Hamlin; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Tony) Ritenour, Amiee Ward, Sara Kinn, Matthew (April) Hamlin, Angela (Brock) Neal, Hollie Oliveira, Emily and Gregory; ten great grandchildren including Devin and Andrew Hamlin, Alexis, Olivia and Ezekiel Ritenour, and Skyler, Landon and Zoe Neal.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her children, Debra Ginter in 1978, Richard Hamlin in 1987 and Sheryl Abele in 2004, sister, Lucille Lawrence and brother, Lester Kalb.
Dorothy worked for a few years at G.E. before becoming a full-time wonderful mother. She will be remembered as a quiet, compassionate woman of faith, very active in the Bucyrus Nazarene Church for over 50 years and the Crestline Nazarene Church for the past 15 years. She liked ladies Bible study, nursery work and trips with the Prime Timers. She also loved being around water. She and Guy went to Lake Erie and Canada fishing as well as enjoying winters in Florida where she also volunteered in a food pantry. Dorothy and Guy were fortunate to travel including visits to Europe, Israel and Egypt. She enjoyed making a variety of crafts from crocheting to flower arranging. She also had a competitive streak in her playing a relentless game of dominoes and in her later years began collecting a variety of jewelry and perfumes.
Dorothy's funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 6 at Crestline Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Scott Buell officiating. The Hamlin family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus and at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions should be given to Crestline Nazarene Church, Homecare Matters Hospice or Alzheimer's Association through Wise Funeral Service.
