Dorothy A. Pollock

Dorothy A. Pollock, 93, passed away peacefully early Monday morning April 15, 2013 at the Inn at Orchard Park in Bucyrus. She was born on November 21, 1919 to Lucius E. Kepler and Jenny Arminta Roston Kepler. Dorothy grew up on a farm just east of Bucyrus and attended school at North Robinson. When she was a junior in high school, Dorothy and her family moved into town and she graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1938.

After graduation, Dorothy went to work for Dr. Jack Arnold for three years, helping him in his office and at the Bucyrus Hospital. One day while working at the hospital, Dorothy was assigned to take care of a young man who had broken his leg in a motorcycle accident. His name was Harold Pollock. Their meeting grew into a courtship and a few years later, when Harold joined the U.S. Army, they were married in the army base chapel at Camp Gordon, Georgia on January 2, 1943. Harold went overseas in March of 1943 to serve his country during WW II and Dorothy returned to Bucyrus where she worked at the General Electric Lamp Plant for the next five years.

When the war ended, Harold and Dorothy set up housekeeping on East Street, which was their happy home for almost seven decades. There they raised a son and daughter and always had an open door for the neighborhood kids, including the week-long "Monopoly" games on the Pollock's big front porch during the summer where Dorothy would serve Kool-Aid and popcorn.

Dorothy enjoyed working as the "ice cream lady" at Mac's Drive-In for many years. She was always "happy-go-lucky" and full of fun with her co-workers and all those she met. After Mac's Drive-In closed, Dorothy went to work at Clancy's, working there for 11 years.

Family traditions were especially important in the Pollock family. There were the annual corn roasts, which are carried on to this day. Popcorn parties and Friday night game nights were favorites when the grownup kids and grandkids would come back home to join in the fun. You could count on Dorothy to bake a fresh pie or her famous molasses cookies.

Attending Sunday School and church as a family was an important part of the Pollock's life where many enduring friendships were made at Woodlawn E.U.B. Church. Later in life, Dorothy and Harold joined Grace United Methodist and were very active in the Ever Faithful Sunday School class.

Dorothy and Harold were inseparable as they grew old together and were blessed with 67 years of marriage until Harold's death in January 2010.

Dorothy is survived by a son, Gary (Cheryl) Pollock of Columbus, Ohio; daughter Joanne (Doug) Weisenauer of Lykens, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Clint (Liz) Pollock of Lusby, Md., Angel (Daniel) Estigoy of Virginia Beach, Va., Crystal (Brandon) Berman of Westerville, Ohio, Luke (Lacy) Pollock of Circleville, Ohio, Jesiah (Amber) Pollock currently stationed at RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, Lee Chandler of Columbus, Ohio and Joel Chandler, of Los Angeles, Calif.; 15 great-grandchildren, Jacob and Rachel Pollock, Mateo, Isabela and Miguel Estigoy, Olivia and Madison Berman, Thaddeus, Judson, Preston and Seth Pollock, and Gabriel, Naomi, Amariah and Isaiah Pollock; one brother-in-law, James E. Ulmer of Marion, Ohio, three sisters-in-law, Wanda Kershner of Marblehead, Ohio, Evelyn Pollock and Inez Pollock both of Bucyrus, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to Harold, Dorothy is preceded in death by one sister, Marcenia Ulmer, two brothers-in-law, Calvin and Preston Pollock, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Volkmer.

Family will receive friends at Wise Funeral Service from 5-8 pm Friday, April 19, and the funeral service celebrating Dorothy's life will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at Bucyrus United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Kraps officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
