Doris R. Johnson, 88, of Bucyrus, died Sunday, June 16, 2013 at her residence surrounded by family.
She was born April 10, 1925 in Nevada to the late Arthur and Inez (Rech) Snodgrass. Doris graduated at the top of the Nevada class of 1943 of which she was president. On March 4, 1944 she married Ray R. Johnson and he preceded her in death January 1, 1981.
She is survived by their four children, Sandra (Leonard) Lust, Dr. Michael (Sally) Johnson, Dan (Barbara) Johnson and Julie (Robert) Nigh all of Bucyrus. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; one brother, Larry (Janet)
Snodgrass of Nevada as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Doris is preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Snodgrass, Milton Snodgrass and George Snodgrass and one sister Maxine Jacobs.
Doris was a member of Harmony U.M. Church where she taught Sunday School and served as financial secretary. She was a member of Holmes Liberty Study Club, OES #3, Clionian Club and Bucyrus Garden Club.
Doris was a devoted wife and true helpmate to her husband at home and in his work. She assisted him in his auctioneering, sometimes clerking auctions. Doris and Ray shared an interest in antiques. They both enjoyed gardening, especially growing sweetcorn and strawberries, and she preserved many of the things they grew. Doris was a great cook and liked to prepare delicious meals, jams, and baked goods. As a teenager, she worked for Coons Candies where she learned to make wonderful candies. Doris was best known for her amazing pies of all kinds for which she received many requests.
Besides being a devoted wife, Doris was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be missed and remembered by all her family and friends.
Calling hours will be held from 4 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18 at Wise Funeral Service and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Bucyrus U.M. Church Worship Center (corner of Warren & Walnut St.) with Pastor Glory Geib officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Harmony U.M. Church, Gideons International or the Bucyrus Salvation Army through the funeral home.
