Don Brewington, 77, of Bucyrus, died in his sleep Saturday, September 28, 2024 at his home. His death was unexpected; however, he had been in failing health.
Don was born May 23, 1947 in Lakeland, Florida to the late Robert L. and Manda Lou (Mainer) Brewington. His family moved to Bucyrus when he was young. Don graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1966. That same year, he enlisted with the Navy, served on the USS Laffey, and was stationed in various parts of Europe until his honorable discharge. Don returned to Bucyrus and was a skilled machinist working at companies including Tecumseh and Whirlpool in Marion and Carlisle Engineering in Crestline. Following his retirement, he worked as a security guard at Union Tank in Marion and at the Bucyrus Hospital.
Don will be remembered as a caring and compassionate guy. For the past 34 years, he was active with the Day by Day home group of AA in Bucyrus where helped turn many lives around and also met his longtime companion, Barb Hughes. They’ve shared 25 years of love and support for one another, and she survives.
It wasn’t uncommon for neighbors to pass by Don’s home and see him outside washing his cars. Don saw to it that any car he owned looked as if it was just driven off the car lot. He also enjoyed tending to his lawn and occasionally tinkered around his garage. His days began at one of a few local fast-food spots, where he and friends would gather for coffee, fellowship and shared much laughter. On Sunday, he watched NASCAR and over the years, was a big fan of Jeff Gordon and Chase Elliott. Don had the privilege of attending an Indianapolis 500 race several years back, and it was one of the better days of his life. Don also like fishing at local reservoirs and had a connection with the owner of a private pond where he reeled in some rather large fish. For relaxation, he enjoyed watching TV and was a huge fan of “Married… with Children”, often modeling his life around his favorite character, Al Bundy.
Don is survived by his companion, Barb Hughes, daughter, Kim Brewington; son, Clayton “Travis” Brewington; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Trang and Marshall Hughes, Barb’s son and daughter-in-law, who were considered family; sister, Sue (Jim) Railey; and twin brother, Ron (Alice) Brewington. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nella.
His family is planning a celebration of life service, and those details are undecided at this time. Donations in Don’s memory will be accepted though Wise Funeral Service and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his guestbook.
