David W. Horsley, 53, died Monday, September 23, 2024 at his home under the care of his family and Pathways Hospice. He had battled two types of cancer over the past year.
He was born February 4, 1971 in Bucyrus to Carl W. Horsley and Ruth L. (Alt) Kouns who both survive him. Most of David’s childhood was spent riding his bike and hanging out in his Grandpa Horsley’s garage. His love of cars and racing continued as he cheered for Dale Earnhardt and loved early 2000s Monte Carlos, two of which were his prized possessions.
David attended Bucyrus Schools and graduated from Pioneer JVS where he studied carpentry. This led to his work at Wickes Lumber and then Silverline Windows in Marion where he has been a valued employee for 20 years and will truly be missed by his coworkers and customers.
David also loved music. Springsteen, Seger, and all 80s rock were his jam, and he amassed quite the t-shirt and album collection over the years. He spent hours at countless Bratwurst Festivals helping set up stages for bands and enjoying their music. He was a dedicated social member of VFW Post 1078, volunteered for Debbie’s Footsteps events, and helped friends and family any way he could.
10 years ago, David was reacquainted with Jennifer Shackelford who he knew from his school days. David grounded Jen, and Jen brought David out of his shell to enjoy their close circle of friends. They were married on September 17, 2022, with their nearest and dearest in attendance. They camped at Lake Erie and David loved being outdoors. He loved their country home where he took up gardening which he learned from his in-laws, mowing, a little remodeling, listening to music, and the company of his cat “Kitty.”
Family was very important to David, and he loved seeing them succeed. He helped coach his son’s little league team to a city championship, enjoyed being “Papa D” to Jen’s grandchildren, and having them gather at their home and campground.
David is survived by both parents; his wife and best friend, Jennifer Horsley; sons, Seth Horsley and Nic Horsley (fiancée Ashley Harper); stepchildren, Amber Perdue (Adam Gamble) and Brandon Perdue (Marley Eidson); grandchildren, Lincoln, Jackson, Addi, Greyson, and Esmond; sister, Carla (Brad) Eubank; brothers, Jim (Shelly) Horsley and Mike (Tracy) Horsely; and many dear friends and extended family.
Family will receive friends at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus on Friday, September 27 from 4-7 pm and also on Saturday, September 28 from 2-5 pm. Saturday’s gathering will conclude with a eulogy and prayer from his friends, Casey and Warren. David will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made payable to VFW Post 1078 or James Cancer Hospital and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on the guestbook.
