Daniel L. "Boone" Gerstenberger, 48, of rural Bucyrus, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
Dan was born October 26, 1963 in Wyandot County, the son of Jerry and Barbara J. (Moore) Gerstenberger who reside in Oceola. Dan was a 1983 graduate of Wynford High School and had a gift of being able to create unique mechanical creations such as a motorized tea bag dunker which he made for his mom and the three seated bike he and a couple of friends built. Though Dan liked to tinker, his true passion was working on cars. He worked out of his garage which was known by many as Dan's Garage and Dr. Dan spent hours working on cars for his customers, always making sure that no corners were cut. He received many certificates pertaining to cars, motors and engines but he was most proud of receiving his master mechanic certificate. He was also proud to have saved the lives of others through the gift of organ donation.
Dan was a member of Moose Lodge 669 and a social member of the VFW. He enjoyed preparing cars and motors for demolition derbies and when he and good friend Craig Roll got the chance, they would travel to NHRA or NASCAR races and tractor pulls.
In addition to his parents, Dan is survived by his daughter, JoeLena of Bucyrus; four siblings, Vicki (Gerstenberger) Roll, Gerald "Jerry" Gerstenberger, both of Bucyrus, Kelly (Gerstenberger) Siegenthaler and husband Jeff of Dover and Christopher Gerstenberger of Columbus. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Lynn Light of Fostoria, Sara Stover of Nevada, Kari Stover of Bucyrus, Kipp Gerstenberger of Upper Sandusky, Josh, Kaleigh and Kirsten Siegenthaler of Dover, Kasey Gerstenberger of Bucyrus and Mia Gerstenberger of Columbus; great nieces and nephews and his cat, Fat Cat.
Dan was cremated and his family will hold a memorial gathering from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 19 at Wise Funeral Service. A memorial service will follow beginning at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Dan loved anything with an engine, so friends are asked to wear their favorite racing attire for the service.
Memorial contributions may be given to the funeral home to assist with expenses.
