Charles F. McPeak, 94, of Bucyrus died Thursday afternoon, August 28, 2014 at Carlisle Place in Bucyrus where he and his wife recently moved.
He was born in Bucyrus on June 29, 1920 to the late Earl and Lillian (Drehr) McPeak and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1938. While working for Arthur Louis Produce, he went to a dance at Sugar Grove Resort where he met the beautiful Lucile Beamer and they fell in love. Charles answered his country’s call to serve in the Army in November 1942 and married Lucile on Sept. 15, 1943. Lucile preceded him in death Nov. 15, 1991. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe as the 28th Infantry made its way into Germany and was discharged in October 1945. Charles returned home where he and Lucile raised their two daughters and he worked as a driver for Ekleberry Poultry until his retirement. On Dec. 3, 1995, he married the former Ruth V. (Gifford) Cress with whom he enjoyed his golden years and traveling on bus trips with friends and neighbors.
He will be remembered as a thorough, strong and quiet man who was a loving and dedicated husband during both of his marriages and for the meticulous care he took of his yard and garden. Charles also enjoyed woodworking, making yard ornaments along with doll houses and barns for his grandchildren.
Charles was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus and, since marrying Ruth, has worshiped at Sixteen UMC where he served as a greeter and usher. He was also a member of American Legion Post 181 for 62 years.
Charles is survived by his wife, Ruth McPeak; two daughters, Kathie (Frank) Welsh of Sugarland, Texas and Cherie (Mike) Smith of Lexington; two stepchildren, Debbie (David) Hadsell and David (Pat) Cress; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and his sister, Eleanor McPeak of Bucyrus.
In addition to his parents and wife of 48 years, Lucile; he was preceded in death by brother, James McPeak and sister, Sara McPeak.
Funeral services for Charles will be held at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus on Wednesday, September 3 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Pat Fruth officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where full military rites will be rendered by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
