Charles E. Gerhart

Charles E. Gerhart, 58, of Delaware and formerly of Bucyrus, died naturally, yet unexpectedly, Monday, August 6, 2012 at his residence.

He was born February 3, 1954 in Crawford County to Arthur Gerhart who preceded him in death and Annabelle (Ulmer) Gerhart Riedel who resides in Bucyrus. Chuck graduated from Wynford High School in 1972 where he was very successful athletically. He qualified for the state track meet running a relay and the 200 yard dash and he still holds school records in both football and track.

At a young age, he met Rebecca L. Metzger while playing horse shoes at Aumiller Park. They continued hanging out together and a romance blossomed. They were married on April 6, 1974. In addition to his mother and his bride of 38 years, Chuck is survived by two sons, Shawn C. Gerhart and wife, Monica and their expected baby, Ella of Ashley and Kyle Gerhart and wife, Kim of Delaware and their daughter, Morgan. He is also survived by three brothers, Larry (Betsey) Gerhart, Daniel (Krista) Gerhart, both of Bucyrus and Allan (Jamie) Gerhart of Hamilton; two sisters, Elaine (Dan) Whitmeyer of Bucyrus and Diana (Rick) Jones of Galion. Chuck had a special relationship with his cousin, Jim Gerhart and his sister-in-law, Christina Reffey and is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck is preceded in death by his dad and his step-dad, Paul Riedel.

Chuck worked at Timken and in Upper Sandusky at Tower Industries, but his fondest work memories were working with his son, Shawn, at Gerhart's Auto Repair Shop and Washington Auto Parts where he was currently employed.

He was a loyal family man who believed in integrity. Chuck coached his boys at whatever and whenever, teaching them to "win without boasting; lose without excuse." He loved sports statistics and followed whatever sport was in season. He enjoyed playing games with his family and always put his signature spin on them, creating a fun and unique new game which made family time and holidays even better. Chuck liked car rides with Becky and adored every second he spent with his precious granddaughter. He will be remembered for his sense of humor making his famous Coney Dogs.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 9 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday with Rev. Hans Scherner officiating. Chuck's wishes were to be cremated and his cremated remains will be buried in Oakwood Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be given to Willow Brook Christian Communities or Common Ground Free Store through the funeral home.
