Carol E. Newland, 92, formerly of Bucyrus, Ohio passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine, Ohio where she had resided in recent years.
She was born September 3, 1920 in Crawford County, Ohio to the late Roy C. and Laura (Ditty) Linn and graduated from Holmes-Liberty High School. While working at Struble Drug, a young Navy Airman named Charles Newland, whom she had met in Galion, asked her on a date. They were married Oct. 10, 1943 and Charles was killed in action just one year later when his B-24 Liberator was shot down in the Battle of Leyte Gulf over the Philippines while Carol was expecting their only child, Charles Jr.
Carol is survived by her son, Charles A. (Mary) Newland Jr. of DeGraff, Ohio; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; sister, Marjorie Reinhard; several nieces and nephews and her church family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie and Pearson Linn and two sisters, Mildred Hoover and Virginia Orewiler.
Carol will be remembered for her love of Jesus Christ and devotion to seeing the Gospel spread throughout the world, even being honored by the Bucyrus First Church of the Nazarene, where she was an active member for most of her life, for her missions dedication. She made stuffed animals and rag dolls that were sent to children all over the world and, more recently, her grandchildren and great grandchildren were given them as well. She was very talkative and loved to reminisce about Bucyrus, Crawford County and the many journeys she had experienced. Carol loved to travel, seeing most of the United States, take photos, record and distribute the sermon teachings she heard and catching up with her family on the telephone.
Carol's family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. The funeral will begin Saturday at 3:30 with Pastor Ray LaSalle officiating and a private burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery on a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bucyrus Church of the Nazarene Missionary Fund through the funeral home.
