Byron W. "Barney" Garrett, 71, died early Friday morning, May 8, 2015 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after a recent and sudden illness.
He was born October 17, 1943 in Barnesville, Ohio to the late G. Wayne and Evelyn M. (Neisz) Garrett. His family moved to Crawford County when Byron was 5 where he attended school in Chatfield through the 11th grade and was a member of the first graduating class at Buckeye Central High School in 1961.
He met Jeanne Henry in 1963 while at Freddie’s and soon thereafter, earned the trust of her father and they married in 1965. Byron loved solving problems and taking the initiative of learning how to do things on his own. He worked as a mechanical design engineer at North Electric which later became ITT; he also worked at PECO II for a number of years before retiring. His meticulous attention to detail and honesty, led him to become a well-respected carpenter. He started Barney’s Workshop and he loved exceeding his customers’ expectations, which was pretty easy as he never cut corners.
Byron loved being in church. Earlier in their lives, he and Jeanne attended Scioto UMC and they were longtime members of Epworth UMC before the formation of the Bucyrus UMC. He was a former youth leader, sang in the choir for many years and enjoyed being a church trustee. Byron served six active years in the Ohio Army National Guard and he was a member of the Bucyrus Masonic Lodge. In addition to his wood working, he loved having family gatherings at his home and he enjoyed golfing with friends. Byron had a very reserved personality but inside he strived to please others through his God given talents. One of his most humbling accomplishments was being part of a three man team who developed a new power supply unit for the telephone industry and received a patent for it and was manufactured in Florida for many years.
In addition to Jeanne, the love of his life and wife of 50 years, Byron is survived by two children, Kenneth (Dodie) Garrett of Gahanna and Kelly (Darin) Newmyer of Shelby and four grandchildren, Chloe Garrett and Cole Garrett and Luke Newmyer and Samantha Newmyer. Family meant everything to Byron. He also had two step-grandchildren, Kyle and Jarred Newmyer; three brothers, Charles “Billy” (Patty) Garrett, David Garrett, and Kevin (Patti) Garrett all of Bucyrus; one sister, Connie (Peter) Calvert of Shaker Heights; one sister-in-law, Joyce Stroud of Toledo in addition to many nieces and nephews.
Byron is preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Larry Stroud and his father and mother-in-law, Carl and Eileen Henry.
