Robert E. Burling, 89, of Bucyrus, died Sunday, November 3, 2013 at his residence.
Bob was a lifelong Bucyrus resident born January 24, 1924 to the late John and Amanda (Miller) Burling. He was a crafty and skilled individual who at a young age learned the value of hard work. Bob used his values working at various jobs before landing a position with the City of Bucyrus where he operated heavy machinery at the city landfill and did other various jobs for the community until retiring in 1987. He was also proud to have transformed his ’56 Chevy Truck into the area’s first garbage truck and used it for his personal business, “Bob’s U Call, I’ll Haul.”
One day while in Marion, Bob met Ruby A. Vaughn who worked at a coffee shop. They dated for a few years and on November 18, 1949 they were married. Ruby passed away in September of 2009 following 60 years of marriage. Bob loved his family and he believed in taking care of them, so he continued using his knowledge by working on cars, mowers, chainsaws, and snow blowers as a way to feed that need as well as to keep busy in his garage or his “home away from home.” There, he worked and enjoyed socializing with friends such as Mike Bishop and others over the years.
He enjoyed playing jokes on others, but also loved helping his neighbors out when they needed something. In the past, he liked going to the family trailer at Lake Erie to fish and relax. Bob also enjoyed his pets and riding motorcycles.
He is survived by his son, Michael Burling, daughter, Shirley Kincade, daughter-in-law, Patty Burling; seven grandchildren, Michael (Terry) Burling, Todd Burling, Benjamin Burling, Jillea Burling, Jonathan Partlow, Joseph (Mindy) Partlow, and Trina Partlow; 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Katie Burling and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by brothers, Harold, Russell, Alvin “Babe” and Donald Burling; sister, Edith Hart; grandson, Mattew Burling and son-in-law, Melvyn Kincade.
The Burling family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 7 at Wise Funeral Service where his funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday with Certified Celebrant, Mark Dettmer officiating. Bob will then be taken to his final resting place in Crawford County Memory Gardens in the back of his prized ’56 Chevy.
Memorial contributions may be given to HomeCare Matters Hospice through the funeral home and online expressions of sympathy can be shared in a Memorial Guestbook entry below.
