Velva “Belle” Shumaker, 96, of North Robinson died peacefully Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Mill Creek Nursing in Galion.
Belle was born October 5, 1920 in Bellepoint, Ohio to the late Carl and Stella (Long) Roe. She married the love of her life, Donald Shumaker, on June 15, 1939 and he passed away May 6, 1996. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Eva Goodhart and Eleanor Long; one brother, Paul Roe; and her daughter-in-law, Judy Shumaker.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Bill Denton of Bucyrus; her son, Patrick Shumaker of Tokyo, Japan; five grandchildren, Tamara Ackerman, Amy Denton, Brian Denton, Aaron Shumaker, and Dave Scott; 15 great grandchildren, Danielle Denton, Justin Ackerman, Zackary Denton, Katie Brunk, Chelsey Ketring, Joshua Denton, Hannah Denton, Moshe Denton, Chiam Denton, Kayla Denton, Nosson Denton, Sara Leih Denton, Brian Stevens, Jessica Stevens, and Anna Belle Shumaker; and was expecting her first great-great grandchild in December.
Belle was an active member of North Robinson United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, youth adviser, and secretary of the administrative council. She was a 1938 graduate of North Robinson High School and work for the North Robinson and Colonel Crawford Schools as a cook in the cafeteria for 26 years. She also worked many summers at Mac’s Drive-In. She was a big supporter of the school and enjoyed going to football and basketball games. Belle and Don were also very active members of the Colonel Crawford Lions Club. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Belle will be laid to rest in Campbell Cemetery, 1697 Parcher Road, Bucyrus, on Monday, November 7 at 11:00 am. Friends are also encouraged to celebrate her life at a memorial service on Wednesday, November 9 at 7:00 pm in the old Colonel Crawford Cafeteria in North Robinson with Pastor Becky Smithey officiating.
Contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Col. Crawford Lions Club through Wise Funeral Service. Memories and photos can be shared on Belle’s Tribute Wall.
