Barbara Ann Clayton, 78, of Bucyrus died Wednesday, May 25, 2017 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital after becoming gravely ill for the past month.
She was born March 18, 1939 in Bucyrus to the late Clarence and Bertha (Finical) Flock. She was a fun-loving girl who hung out with her brothers and loved her neighborhood dogs. She enjoyed being a car-hop at Freddy’s and after graduating from Bucyrus High School in 1957 she worked for Swan Rubber. She married Eugene M. Clayton, who she knew growing up, on September 22, 1961 after his first discharge from the Air Force. Gene reenlisted and Barbara became a homemaker, living all over the US and world with Italy and the DC area being favorites. There was no place like home though and the Claytons returned to Bucyrus in 1977 after Gene’s retirement. He preceded her in death on September 30, 2013.
Barbara was a simple woman, loving mother, and great homemaker and wife whose cooking was out of this world, especially her scalloped potatoes. After settling back home, she and Gene didn’t travel much anymore, but enjoyed the occasional “big trip” to Marion or Amish Country. They looked forward to morning coffee and feeding birds and she cared for many dogs over the years. Her favorite was Sammy who Gene picked up while serving as the county dog warden. She collected owls and they liked playing cards with friends, but her favorite pastime was reminiscing about the Bucyrus and Crawford County she knew as a child. She was baptized and confirmed at Good Hope Lutheran Church and was a big fan of country music, especially her man, George Jones. She also could be heard cheering on her beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.
Barbara is survived by two children, Holly Ann (Donnie) Mofford of Bucyrus and Ray M. (Linda) Clayton of North Robinson; three grandchildren, Ashley Liles, Keith Liles, and Cody Reinhart; two great grandchildren, Ethan Liles and Alexandria Liles; and one brother, Ronald Flock of North Carolina.
In addition to her parents and husband of 52 years, she was preceded in death her brother, Richard Flock
Funeral services will be held at Wise Funeral Service on Tuesday, May 30 at 1:00 pm with Celebrant Mark Dettmer officiating. The Clayton family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. and burial will follow the service in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Wounded Warrior Project through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Barbara’s Tribute Wall.
