Alice I. Whaley, 91, died Sunday evening, January 12, 2025 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.
She was born in Bucyrus on March 12, 1933 to the late Floyd and Clara (Lohr) Orewiler and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1951. That summer, she married Jack Whaley and they shared 48 years of marriage when he preceded her in death in 1999. Alice also earned her associate’s in business management from Marion Tech in 1992.
Alice worked for G.E. before joining North Electric in Galion. She also cleaned homes for several years. She enjoyed gathering with fellow North Electric retirees to reminisce over a meal. Alice liked to stay busy sewing and crafting gifts for people. She was the consummate perfectionist who would restart a cross stitch if it wasn’t just so. Family vacations and travel were important to the Whaleys and they visited the west coast on a few occasions and all points in between. She and Jack especially loved visiting National Parks and taking in the colors of Autumn.
In her early years, Alice looked forward to her bowling league and she has always enjoyed impromptu family picnics. She and Jack especially enjoyed the Whaley and Orewiler family reunions. More recently, she was an avid viewer of both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Alice was affiliated with the former Bucyrus congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and found peace in their teachings. After her husband’s death, Alice enjoyed the companionship of Richard Casto with whom she shared an interest in music and watching the Buckeyes.
Alice is survived by children, Deborah Boles, David (Laurie) Whaley, and Kevin Whaley; grandchildren, Chris (Lauren) Whaley, Marlon Boles II, Janell Whaley (Jason Sams), and Alicia (Tim) Vose; great granddaughters, Alyse and Eleanor Whaley; great grandson, Jensen Whaley-Sams; sisters-in-law, Wilda Orewiler and Sue Ballard; brother-in-law, Jerry (Sue) Whaley; her companion, Richard Casto and his family; along with many extended family whom she loved.
In addition to parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Francis Orewiler, Floyd “Junior” Orewiler, Robert “Shorty” Orewiler, and Marvin Orewiler, and sisters-in-law, Jenny Orewiler and Janette Orewiler.
All services will be held on Saturday, January 18 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:55 pm and the funeral will begin at 3:00 pm. Her burial in Oakwood Cemetery will be private.
Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to Avita Hospice or Humane Society Serving Crawford County and given through the funeral home. Photos and memories can be shared on the guestbook of Alice’s tribute page at www.wisefuneral.com.
