Alan L. Griebling

Alan Griebling, 71, longtime Lexington resident and formerly of Bucyrus, died Wednesday, October 9, 2024 under the care of OhioHealth Hospice in Mansfield.

Alan was born June 7, 1953 in Mansfield to the late Lester C. and Eleanor (Piper) Griebling. He was a 1971 graduate of Lexington High School, serving as class president and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business from The Ohio State University in 1975.

Al’s father built Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 1962 and following college, Al returned to the family business and served as general manager until retiring in 2002. He later worked for a number of years at IB Tech in Bucyrus and Kasai in Upper Sandusky. It was while at Mid-Ohio where he met Sharon (Jacobs) Knodell and in October of 1993 they married and shared 26 years of marriage until her passing in 2019.

Being a proud OSU alumnus, Al attended many Buckeye sporting events, but when not able to be there in person, he still cheered on his Scarlet and Gray! He also enjoyed auto racing, specifically Indy Car and was proud that their family business, Mid-Ohio, hosted the first ever road race before it was even referred to as Indy Car Racing. Al enjoyed various travels over the years and loved the companionship his dogs offered. An avid golfer, Al was formerly a member of Westbrook Country Club, but also enjoyed rounds of golf at other area courses. In more recent years, he liked to care for his lawn and spent many hours tending to his vegetable garden.

Al is survived by brothers, Gary Griebling, Doug (Susan) Griebling and Tracy Griebling; stepchildren, Jacki Schell, Shawn (Michelle) Knodell and Kris (Shelley) Knodell as well as many other extended family members.

In addition to his parents and wife, Sharon, Al was preceded in death by infant sister, Lane Griebling and a sister-in-law, Linda Griebling.
